Mental Health First Aid Training with the African Community in Western Melbourne

What a day we had at the Mental Health First Aid Training with the African community yesterday in Western Melbourne.
A great turn out with representation from 9 countries. It was great to see respected community leaders (some coming as far as Ballarat) and our religious leaders in the room, getting the skills they need to help their own communities.

My key take away was the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan abbreviated as ALGEE.
A-approach a person, assess and assist.
L-listen and communicate non-judgementally
G-give support and information
E-encourage the person to get professional help
E – encourage other supports

Great facilitation from the colourful Francis Nii Lanteye ACQUAH Dr And Josephine Swaray. You guys made the day lively. Great trainers with strong cultural competency, knowledge and ability to connect with audience.

Thanks to the wonderful Melissa Knight Dan Brown and the leadership of North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) for the excellent support to the African community in raising awareness on mental health.
